‘Twixmas’ is that dead time between Christmas and New Year when the date goes a bit hazy, the days are spent on the sofa and most of us don’t get anything ‘practical’ done.
Also called ‘Romjule’ in Nordic traditions, it’s the perfect time to pamper yourself and relax into the sort of self-care challenging in the busy rest of the year.
This year, we’re highlighting how you can take advantage of the time by indulging in a serious hair upgrade. You don’t need to worry about how you look during, and by the end you’ll look fabulous.
A scalp massage is the perfect place to start. It helps blood rush to the surface of the scalp which packs it with nutrients.
It also helps encourage growth and is deeply relaxing. Warm some natural oils (very gently, you don’t want to burn your scalp) and follow this great guide to self-massage or ask a partner to help.
Be generous with the oils, don’t scrimp, the next step will remove any excess.
No matter what you’re planning, clarifying is always a great way to start. It allows you to remove any product residue or environmental toxins that impact your scalp and hair health.
We use a clarifier rich in calendula for soothing, citrus and natural plant oils that not only cleanses deeply but refreshes the scalp thoroughly.
The good news is there are no sulphates – these are harsh detergents in many clarifiers that effectively clean grease but also strip the hair of natural oils that protect it from harm and dryness.
At this point you need to decide what your goal is. If you’re colouring your hair, prep up your henna, indigo and or amla and get the colour on your scalp.
We’ve got some brilliant guides to help you mix your recipes, or pre-mix henna dyes here if you want a more predictable result. All are free from Sulphates, PPD, Silicones and SLeS.
These are ingredients common in mainstream hair dyes that are deeply harmful, not just to human but also environmental health.
If you’re not colouring, or you’re finished you might want to deep condition or treat for your hair type.
· If your hair is fine, or breaking choose bhringaraj for silver hues and shine
· If your hair is grey, choose amla for ashy tones or cassia for golden lights and shine
Mix up your treatment (usually with warm water until thick) then slick through your hair roots to tips. Most treatments need an hour or so to be best effective, so pop on a face mask or a movie at the same time for maximum benefit.
Finally, finish up with a final, tiny amount of oil through the ends, relax and enjoy the rest of your festive season with the swishy, perfect hair you’ve always dreamed of.
