We all have periods where our self care routines fall by the wayside. Stress, illness, pregnancy; these all take precedence over daily skin care habits or making sure that hair is properly conditioned!
It’s hard coming out of it and not feeling yourself if those habits have been lost, and even harder to know how to start rebuilding a good routine.
Don’t fret if you find yourself in this position. We have some helpful tips below to get you started:
1. First and foremost…
Be kind to yourself. The best way to get restarted with self care is to care for yourself.
Start by taking some time to rest, and recharge.
If you’re a fan of a bath, try adding a couple of drops of Lavender oil in. Lavender is renowned for its calming, stress-relieving properties; so you can fully unwind.
If you’d rather relax with a gripping book or in front of the telly, use the Acala Cosy Nights candle, to really make your you-time feel like a treat.
2. Easy, gentle routines work best.
Getting back into a skin or hair routine should be a treat - take that time for you to focus on yourself.
Start with the very basics and build up if you need to. If you’ve not done a full routine for a while, using too many new products and over-exfoliating can actually be detrimental to you - stripping your skin of essential moisture and oils.
Restarting Your Skin Care:
When you start to rebuild your skin-care routine, focus solely on just two things: cleansing and moisturising.
Cleansing is the most vital step; it’ll help to remove dead skin, dirt, impurities and oil build up.
Make sure to gently massage the cleanser you use into your face, in soft, circular motions. This will also help stimulate your blood vessels and promote circulation - giving you a more youthful glow.
We recommend Odylique’s Creamy Coconut Cleanser; as it is suitable for all skin types. A gentle cleanser full of olive and coconut oils, which help hydrate the skin while it cleanses.
Follow up with a good all-round moisturiser, such as the Odylique Timeless Rose Moisturiser. Rose essential oil is very soothing for skin, with properties that help regenerate skin cells; perfect for helping rejuvenate your complexion after a stressful period.
If you need, add in the Avocado Cream as a richer night time cream. This can also double up as a rich day cream, but might be too heavy if you have combination, normal or oily skin.
Restarting Your Hair Care:
Getting back into taking care of your hair is also tricky. We’re all prone to weeks where dry shampoo and a high ponytail is the best we can manage.
Firstly, focus on removing scalp and hair build up, by using a clarifying treatment. This is a once a month treatment in place of your usual shampoo. It’s easy to just want to get straight to conditioning our lengths and ends - that’s what we can see!
However, removing build up helps to prevent scalp irritation, which can lead to bigger troubles, such as folliculitis, eczema, acne or psoriasis; which can lead to thinning hair.
Be gentle and massage the product into your scalp and roots, leaving it for ten minutes, before rinsing. Make sure to follow with a good conditioner.
The It’s Pure Clarifying Treatment is best for this as it is made with natural oils and clays, so it protects your skin as well as removing impurities.
Hairdressers advise washing your hair, at most, 3 times a week. This lets your hair develop its natural oils. If you’ve not been keeping up with this, it might feel correct to wash every day - but you’ll strip your hair of the goodness it needs to keep it healthy, and strong.
It’s critical then, to find a shampoo that works for you. For dry, itchy scalps, Odylique’s Tea Tree shampoo will help to soothe your scalp and offer some relief; as well as aid healthy hair growth.
For oily, greasy scalps, try Acala Green Matcha Shampoo Bar. Gentle enough to not strip your scalp of its natural oils, it removes grease and impurities as well as being moisturising for hair.
If your hair is very dry, or prone to breakage, try the Odylique Lavender Shampoo instead. Gentle, but richly moisturising and hydrating for your locks, it’ll help to keep them feeling nourished and strengthened.
Follow up your shampoo with a conditioner. The Odylique Conditioner and Treatment tubes are perfect for a simple routine. They are nourishing enough for a conditioner, but can also be used as a separate leave in treatment if you find your lengths and ends feel a little dry between washes.
3. Try a skin, or hair mask.
Lastly, if you find you’ve got time and want to try an additional treat for yourself, use a face, or hair mask.
The Odylique Maca Mask is a lovely clay mask. Use it to help lift impurities from the skin, and gently lift dead skin cells; it also helps with tightening and softening skin.
If your skin could really use an extra boost of moisture, the Lavera 2in1 Basis Mask is a thick cream mask designed to care for and nourish dry, mature or sensitive skin.
If your hair is lacking in lustre, or feels fine and lifeless, a Cassia treatment would work wonders. Either mix with water, or for very dry hair mix with yoghurt or oil, and leave for 40-50 minutes.
Cassia helps lift and volumize hair, giving it a lovely shine. Don’t be put off by the time; wrap it in a cap or cling-film while you do something else - have a bath, read a book, even do yoga!
For hair that is really limp and used to have a bounce, or wave to it, try Amla. Amla is used in the same way as Cassia but is known for repairing hair structure and strengthening hair bonds, so wavy or curly hair that hasn’t received care will benefit from an Amla treatment.
